Civil and Human RightsIsrael's Declaration of Independence says: "Israel will ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or gender; it will guarantee freedom of religion, conscience, language, education and culture."The NIF supports groups and projects working to fulfil this vision. From women's and LGBT rights, to the relationship between synagogue and state, to protecting the rights of Jewish and non-Jewish minorities, NIF has founded, funded, trained or otherwise supported every significant human and civil rights organisation in Israel.
Social and Economic JusticeEquality requires not just human and civil rights, but also equality of opportunity: freedom from poverty, access to education, employment and affordable housing, the right to basic public services and health care. The NIF works to ensure social and economic justice for all Israelis, the unemployed and those on low wages, single parents, the elderly, Israeli Arabs, new immigrants and Mizrachim. We support groups that campaign for their rights and work for equality of opportunity for all.
Religious Pluralism and ToleranceTo fulfil the vision of its founders, Israel must always be a country for all its citizens, including all its Jews, whatever their beliefs, background and practices. NIF works to promote religious freedom in Israel, to foster a more tolerant society that embraces the rich diversity of Jewish identity, and that creates a sphere of non-religious, civil law for all Israeli citizens.
Shared SocietyPart of NIF’s mission is to create a safe space for dialogue and engagement between all sections of Israeli society: religious and secular, Orthodox and Reform, Ashkenazi and Mizrachi, Jews and Arabs. We value all those that make up Israeli society and work to empower them to control their own lives, while peacefully co-existing with their neighbours.
EnvironmentIn an area the size of Wales, seven million people are building a country faster than its resources can sustain. In partnership with other foundations, NIF sponsors the Green Environment Fund to promote environmental activism throughout Israel. Our work on environmental justice issues covers the protection of water sources and coast line, opposing unsustainable developments, tackling pollution and protecting local habitats.
