Group pushes for war help for poor
July 25, 2006

The New Israel Fund will advocate for sirens and shelters for poor Arab and Jewish towns in northern Israel.

The U.S. Jewish fund-raising group, which backs projects promoting Jewish-Arab coexistence, laid out its priorities during the current crisis in a release Monday.

“The current crisis has highlighted the need for additional advocacy efforts to protect underserved populations,” the group said in a statement. “Many Arab Israeli towns and villages and disadvantaged Jewish communities lack not only the safe haven of air raid shelters, but warning sirens to indicate incoming fire.”

Two Muslim children in Nazareth were killed in a Hezbollah rocket attack last week, and residents complained of a lack of sirens.
