Jerusalem remains a world away from the cosmopolitan 'bubble' of Tel Aviv, but at its heart – and at the heart of this inspiring documentary - is Shushan, the only gay bar in Jerusalem, a much-loved haven for Jews and Arabs alike, owned by City Councillor Sa’ar Nathaniel. We meet regulars Adam, politicised after surviving a frenzied knife attack by an Orthodox Jew; Samira, an admirably no-nonsense Palestinian Israeli; and Boody, aka Miss Haifa - ‘Palestine’s first drag queen’ - as he faces exile. Investigating the ongoing tensions between secular and religious society in Israel and Palestine, and the legacy of the violence suffered by the gay community during the 2006 World Pride celebrations, City of Borders hails the bravery of those who continue the struggle for human rights. The eventual closure of the Shushan bar is a painful blow, but this pioneering experiment in tolerance and co-existence lives on in its regulars - a resilient community proudly doing all they can for peace.
