Join New Israel Fund and our distinguished speakers Prof. Naomi Chazan and Nabila Espanioly to discover how civil, human and economic rights for Israeli Arabs are issues crucial to the long-term survival of the state.

In 2003 an Israeli government commission – the Orr Commission - announced that Arab citizens of Israel face discrimination in all aspects of life such as lands allocation, urban planning, housing, infrastructure, economic development, jobs and education. Over half of poor families in Israel are Arab, although they are only 20% of the population; and Arab municipalities are among the poorest in the country. Israel's 1.37 million Arab citizens vote, pay taxes and speak Hebrew and Arabic, yet suffer pervasive discrimination.

Learn how justice and equal opportunity for all of Israel’s citizens are a critical prerequisite to achieving a true democratic society for all citizens within Israel’s borders, and to helping everyone in Israeli society feel they have a stake in its success and prosperity.

Naomi Chazan: is President of the international NIF Board and the Dean of the School of Government and Society at the Academic College of Tel Aviv – Yaffo. She was Deputy Speaker of the Israeli Knesset and is considered one of Israel’s top legislators of the past decade, specialising in human rights, gender equality, and consumer affairs. Naomi is a Professor Emeritus of Political Science and African Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and is among the founders of the Israel Women’s Network and other important social change organisations.

Nabila Espanioly: is the founder and Director of the Pedagogical Center and Multipurpose Women’s Centre in Nazareth (Al-Tufula) since 1989.  Nabila is also a founding member and current chairperson of the Mossawa Center - the Advocacy Center for Arab Citizens in Israel.  In 2003, Nabila received the international Aachen Peace Prize in recognition of her efforts to promote peace and human rights in the Middle East. She is an author and member of the international NIF Board.
