Message from our Chief Executive, Adam Ognall
You
have been hearing a lot from NIF about the social protests in Israel. It was
the theme of our Rosh Hashana video greeting and at the centre of our Rosh Hashana Appeal Card. The Card ‘Israel’s Future Starts Here’
features a few of the inspiring people in Israel we work with, such as Eran
Buchenwald who works with poor communities, particularly youth, in the Negev to
encourage enterprise.

Social Justice Demonstrators Dominate Haaretz 100 Top People 5771 List
Haaretz has named its 100 most influential people of 5771,
and in a departure from its normal procedure, the paper placed a rather large
group in first place:
"You – the Israeli public who in the summer of 2011
took its own fate into its hands."

NIF Online Petition Makes Media Headlines in Israel
An online petition organised by NIF and signed by nearly
4,000 Jews worldwide in support of the Israeli social justice protests made
major media headlines in Israel ahead of the largest of the mass social protest
demonstrations. A full-page advert about the petition, including thousands of
signatories, appeared in the Israeli edition of the International Herald
Tribune.

Court Orders Man to Pay Compensation for Persuading Brother Not to Divorce Wife
In a precedent-setting decision, the Jerusalem Family
Affairs Court ordered a man to pay over £6,000 in compensation to his
sister-in-law because he persuaded his brother not to grant her a divorce. The
woman was represented by NIF grantee Mavoi Satum (Dead End), which is a
member of the International Coalition for Agunah Rights (ICAR),
also supported by NIF. According to Jewish, and thus Israeli law, a woman who
does not receive a religious divorce from her husband is known as an agunah,
or chained woman, and cannot remarry.

Jewish Quarterly Offer for NIF Supporters
“From the Palestinian Declaration
of Independence to competitive cheesemongering in New York, and from Stephen
Sondheim to The Wire, the Jewish Quarterly looks hard at the ideas behind the
issues. Redesigned by award-winning designer, Mark Leeds, our new look
expresses our playful seriousness in graphic elegance - as shown by Noma Bar's
brilliant cover illustration. Our design is new but our content remains, as
ever, extravagantly thoughtful and utterly readable.”
To celebrate their redesign, the
Jewish Quarterly is offering a discount to NIF supporters. To subscribe visit http://jewishquarterly.org/ and quote JQNIF for special 5
for 4 offer.
