Message from our Chief Executive, Adam Ognall

Dear Friends

This month we were delighted to host Itzik Shanan, Founder and Director of Kick Racism out of Israeli Football (and NIF’s Communications Director in Israel). Itzik spoke about the project at a number of events including a joint screening of the ‘Sons of Sakhnin United’ film with the JCC, where he was joined on a panel with Ivor Baddiel (who has recently produced a short film on anti-Semitism in English football).

Israel’s Treatment of Strangers – volunteering with Hotline for Migrant Workers

I am volunteering for Hotline for Migrant Workers, a NIF grantee. Hotline provides support and advice to migrant workers and asylum seekers. I visit those held in the Givon Prison complex “detention centre”, just south of Tel Aviv to provide advice and support. There are 400 people held there at any one time. Some entered Israel legally with work permits that are no longer legal. Others arrived seeking asylum as refugees.

Triumph as New Israel Fund Launches in Oz

The launch of the New Israel Fund in Australia in May sparked some controversy in the community, the majority of whom have heard only the official party line on Israel for years.

NIF president Naomi Chazan flew into that storm this month, greeted by some calls for her to be banned from speaking at Limmud-Oz.

Shavuot Tikkun Encompasses the Full Spectrum of Israeli Society

In honour of the Shavuot holiday now marked by serious study and learning, thousands of Israelis participated in 35 NIF-funded study sessions. The sessions, many of them sponsored by groups not previously associated with NIF, reflected the complex composition of Israeli society and the daunting range of moral issues confronting the country.

Haifa’s “Model City of Joint Living” project gains International Recognition

Last month, Shahira Shalabi, head of SHATIL's Shared Society projects, and I had the privilege of sharing SHATIL's Haifa as a Model City of Joint Living project with representatives of cities in transition from throughout the world. The project works to transform Haifa into a shared city based on partnership respecting all residents and strengthening a mutual sense of ownership over life in Haifa.
