Message from Ellen Goldberg, NIF UK Executive Director

Recognising various forms of Jewish religious practice in Israel and support for Israel’s Arab citizens are issues about which everyone has an opinion. Message from Nicholas Saphir, NIF UK Chairman

This year the New Israel Fund celebrates 30 years of strengthening democracy and promoting social justice in Israel by hosting our 3rd Human Rights Awards Dinner.

By some standards, that’s not a long time, but in the life of Israel 30 years spans almost half the nation’s history. So as we celebrate our anniversary and successes, we also reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of the miracle that is Israel.

2009 Award
Winner News

Our annual Human Rights Awards Dinner has become the most important event in our calendar. It is made even more significant in that this year we are celebrating NIF’s 30th anniversary.

At the awards ceremony, the New Israel Fund community will honour two outstanding human rights activists from Israel, recognise 30 years of significant NIF achievement - a transformed landscape for social change and social justice - and raise money for an even better Israel.

We will be joined by our two winners who have each made lasting contributions to strengthening democracy and equal opportunities in Israel. They use different approaches to work on Israel’s most challenging internal issues today – the relationship between religion and state, and majority-minority relations.

Anat Hoffman

Representing NIF’s Achievements in Human and Civil Rights and Religious Pluralism

Anat Hoffman is a long-time warrior for justice and equality, particularly representing the Civil Rights and Peace Movements. She has been the Executive Director of the Israel Religious Action Centre (IRAC) of the Progressive Movement in Israel since April of 2002. As head of IRAC, Anat is involved in many of the petitions and struggles for the rights of women in general and more specifically in religious practice, and to achieve social justice and equality for all.

Helmi Kittnei

Representing NIF’s Achievements in Human and Civil Rights for Israel’s Arab Citizens

As the Director of the Centre for Jewish-Arab Economic Development (CJAED), Helmi Kittani is a major driving force for economic cooperation between Jews and Arabs in Israel and the economic development of the Arab community. Through shared economic development and providing specific support to Israel’s Arabs, Helmi’s efforts have provided the foundation on which both Jews and Arabs significantly contribute to build the economy and increase the prosperity of the State of Israel and its people.
