Baby Steps in Nazareth

It’s not that conversation here (I write from Jerusalem) is about existential questions. In fact, there is little such talk. But the existential question, like a miasma, is everywhere, inescapable. The response approaches the bi-polar, grand visions of Israel’s might and power one minute, dismal perceptions of Israel’s alone-ness, its vulnerability the next.

Jerusalem Machane Yehuda Market “Happening” Protests Unfair Division of Budgetary Cake

At the end of the protest in Jerusalem’s Mahane Yehuda market last week, social activists cut up a huge cake baked especially for the occasion, which demonstrated the unfair division of the new budget passed by the Knesset. The protest was organised in cooperation with the Mahane Yehuda Market Traders Association and A Different Society Is Possible, a coalition of 50 diverse social justice organisations, most of them NIF grantees, that receives considerable assistance from SHATIL.

Jerusalem Planning Committee Approves Gazelle Park

The Jerusalem District Planning and Construction Committee have formally approved the plans for a 64-acre urban park in Gazelle Valley. This follows last year’s decision by the committee that the area be slated for nature preservation rather than construction, and puts an end to a nine-year struggle.

NIF Professional Training Empowers Ultra-Orthodox Divorcees

Aliza —not her real name — is an ultra-Orthodox divorcee who is training to be a real estate agent. The 27 year-old Jerusalem mother of two young daughters is one of 60 divorced ultra-Orthodox women training in economic empowerment at Em Habanim in the city’s Har Nof neighborhood. The course is funded by the NIF Endowment Fund in Memory of Yaffa London-Ya'ari through the MATI Jerusalem Business Development Center.

Ministry of Transportation Unveils Plans for Buses in Arab Towns

Next week, senior Ministry of Transportion officials will meet with eleven Arab Israeli mayors to present a public transportation plan for their towns. The plan, called “Alternatives,” was initiated by NIF grantee Kayan (Being): The Feminist Organization for Women in Arab Society.
