NIF Fund for Jewish Pluralism in Israel

The Fund for Jewish Pluralism in Israel supports NIF’s efforts to promote freedom of and from religion in Israel. NIF has been at the forefront of efforts to move Israeli society toward a multi-faceted approach to matters of religion and identity. NIF believes that promoting Jewish pluralism, tolerance and social cohesion is crucial to the existence of a strong democratic and Jewish state, and to strengthening the connection between Israeli and Diaspora Jewry.

Jewish Renewal Program

NIF's Jewish Renewal Program supports a growing trend in Israel today in which secular (non-Orthodox) Jews of all types are beginning to connect - or reconnect - to their Judaism. Young secular Jews are flocking to new programs that combine study of Jewish texts with social action inspired by Jewish values, creating new Israeli-bred spiritual communities across the country, and developing new ways of connecting to their Jewish heritage and identity.

Promoting Liberal Orthodoxy in Israel

NIF has identified the liberal Orthodox sector as a key influence in Israeli society and is currently seeking partners in order to significantly expand our work in this sector. As the national religious sector in Israel grapples with the process of soul-searching in the era of post-disengagement from Gaza, there are growing voices within this sector to focus on issues within Israeli society – issues of social justice, women’s rights, and education for democracy

Promoting Liberal Orthodox Education

In recent years, National Religious groups in Israel have evinced an increasing tendency to religious and political radicalization, particularly in the school systems. As a response to this worrying phenomenon, liberal Orthodox groups approached NIF for aid in developing more progressive educational institutions.

Campaign for Religious Freedom

The Campaign for Religious Freedom supports legal and advocacy efforts to promote freedom of choice in marriage and other life cycle events, and to ensure that all expressions of Judaism may enjoy cultural and legal legitimacy. In Israel, the Orthodox religious establishment continues to have exclusive jurisdiction on issues of marriage, divorce, burial, conversion and more, as dictated by Orthodox interpretations of Jewish law.

SHATIL - Jewish Pluralism Project

Launched in 1998, Shatil’s Jewish pluralism project complements NIF’s grant making in this area, with a focus on the three target population groups:  the general pluralistic public, FSU immigrants and the liberal Orthodox sector.  As such, Shatil’s project aims to: encourage the development of alternative and diverse expressions of Jewish religious practice; strengthen moderate Orthodox groups, as well as the Conservative and Reform movements, in Israel, and promote social justice and equality as fundamental Jewish values.
